Cambodia, Vietnam to Enhance Cooperation

Khmer Times | 28 September 2016

Cambodia and Vietnam yesterday pledged to enhance cooperation and also pushed for the completion of demarcating the border to build peace and development.

The discussion was held yesterday during a meeting between National Assembly President Heng Samrin and Vietnam’s National Assembly chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, who was on an official visit to Cambodia.

Mr. Samrin’s spokesman Keo Piseth told reporters after the meeting at the National Assembly that Ms. Kim Ngan affirmed that Vietnam’s policy with Cambodia would remain the same to maintain their close relationship despite political competition from world superpowers.

He added that Vietnam would increase cooperation on military, border and trade issues.

“Both sides promised to make the border of both countries more peaceful and developed in the future,” he said, adding that Vietnam urged Cambodia to reach an agreement on trade.

Mr. Piseth said Vietnam also asked Cambodia to continue connecting telecommunication services and develop the market and economy at the border.

“Vietnam also asked Cambodia to support and encourage Vietnamese companies that are investing in the border region,” he said, adding that both countries wanted to finish demarcating the border as soon as possible.

“Vietnam also asked Cambodia to support and protect legal Vietnamese companies that are investing in Cambodia.”
